Happy Holidays From WD

Categories: Fun, General, There Are No Rules Blog by the Editors of Writer's Digest, What's New Tags: Holidays, Quotes, Zachary Petit.

The Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library’s amazing 2011 holiday card.

Happy holidays from all of us here at WD. Here’s to hoping your own holidays, no matter what they are or where they may take you, are safe, filled with writing and the occasional mulled wine, and as elusively stress-free as they come.

Today we randomly stumbled across a cache of Christmas quotes from writers. Here are a few of our favorites. Got any good holiday quotes from writers? If so, post them in the Comments below, and when the WD staff is back from a short break, I’ll randomly choose one commenter to win a stack of books we have on hand (new novels, writing books, and so on).

Here’s to spending time with our families and our works-in-progress—

“Do give books—religious or otherwise—for Christmas. They’re never fattening, seldom sinful, and permanently personal.”
—Lenore Hershey

“A lovely thing about Christmas is that it’s compulsory, like a thunderstorm, and we all go through it together.”
—Garrison Keillor

“There’s nothing sadder in this world than to awake Christmas morning and not be a child.”
—Erma Bombeck

“In the old days, it was not called the Holiday Season; the Christians called it ‘Christmas’ and went to church; the Jews called it ‘Hanukkah’ and went to synagogue; the atheists went to parties and drank. People passing each other on the street would say ‘Merry Christmas!’ or ‘Happy Hanukkah!’ or (to the atheists) ‘Look out for the wall!”
—Dave Barry

“This is the message of Christmas: We are never alone.”
—Taylor Caldwell

“What I don’t like about office Christmas parties is looking for a job the next day.”
—Phyllis Diller (yeah, yeah, not a writer, but still.)

  1. MEPF says:

“Christmas is the season for kindling the fire of hospitality in the hall, the genial flame of charity in the heart.”
    – Washington Irving

  2. teaverse_atelier says:

‘The best aspect of Christmas is the aspect usually decried by the mystics: the fact that Christmas has been commercialized. The gift-buying . . . stimulates an enormous outpouring of ingenuity in the creation of products devoted to a single purpose: to give men pleasure. And the street decorations put up by department stores and other institutions—the Christmas trees, the winking lights, the glittering colors—provide the city with a spectacular display, which only “commercial greed” could afford to give us.’
    –Ayn Rand

  3. vrundell says:

I do like Christmas on the whole… In its clumsy way, it does approach Peace and Goodwill. But it is clumsier every year. – E.M. Forster

  4. vrundell says:

    Christmas isn’t a season, it’s a feeling–Edna Ferber

Here are some more Christmas quotes from writers that I found:

When we were children we were grateful to those who filled our stockings at Christmas time. Why are we not grateful to God for filling our stockings with legs?
    Gilbert K. Chesterton

Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the delusions of our childhood days, recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth, and transport the traveler back to his own fireside and quiet home!
    Charles Dickens

Love came down at Christmas; love all lovely, love divine; love was born at Christmas, stars and angels gave the sign.
    Christina G. Rossetti

Moving between the legs of tables and of chairs, rising or falling, grasping at kisses and toys, advancing boldly, sudden to take alarm, retreating to the corner of arm and knee, eager to be reassured, taking pleasure in the fragrant brilliance of the Christmas tree.
    T.S. Eliot

Somehow, not only for Christmas but all the long year through, The joy that you give to others Is the joy that comes back to you. And the more you spend in blessing The poor and lonely and sad, The more of your heart’s possessing Returns to you glad.
    John Greenleaf Whittier

Heap on the wood!-the wind is chill; But let it whistle as it will, We’ll keep our Christmas merry still.
    Walter Scott, Sr.

The only real blind person at Christmas-time is he who has not Christmas in his heart.
    Helen Keller

I heard the bells on Christmas Day; their old familiar carols play, and wild and sweet the word repeat of peace on earth, good-will to men!
    Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

The rooms were very still while the pages were softly turned and the winter sunshine crept in to touch the bright heads and serious faces with a Christmas greeting.
    Louisa May Alcott
    Christmas isn’t a season. It’s a feeling.
    Edna Ferber

To perceive Christmas through its wrappings becomes more difficult with every year.
    B. White

Now, the essence, the very spirit of Christmas is that we first make believe a thing is so, and lo, it presently turns out to be so.
    Stephen Leacock

“I do like Christmas on the whole…. In its clumsy way, it does approach Peace and Goodwill. But it is clumsier every year.”
E.M. Forster

    “Love came down at Christmas;
Love all lovely, love divine;
Love was born at Christmas,
Stars and angels gave the sign.”
Christina Rossetti

Every Thanksgiving and Christmas season for four years I dressed chickens and turkeys in the basement of Sam Swanson’s meat market, five cents for getting the feathers off a chicken, ten cents for a turkey.
    Carl Sandburg

    Forget about the crackers,
    And forget about the candy;
I’m sure a box of chocolates
    Would never come in handy;
    I don’t like oranges,
    I don’t want nuts,
    And I HAVE got a pocket-knife
    That almost cuts.
But, oh! Father Christmas, if you love me at all,
Bring me a big, red India-rubber ball!
    A. Milne

    “Christmas is sights,
especially the sights of Christmas
reflected in the eyes of a child.”
William Saroyan
One of the most glorious messes in the world is the mess created in the living room on Christmas day. Don’t clean it up too quickly.”
Andy Rooney

  6. Prague Poet says:

The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live.
    – George Carlin

  7. Merry Christmas, Writers Digest!

A Christmas quote I like is from E.M. Forster: I do like Christmas on the whole… In its clumsy way, it does approach Peace and Goodwill. But it is clumsier every year.

  8. kskinner says:

“Maybe Christmas didn’t come from a store, maybe, perhaps Christmas meant a bit more.” Dr. Seuss

  9. One of the holiday quotes I most like is from E.M. Forster: I do like Christmas on the whole… In its clumsy way it does approach peace and goodwill. But it is clumsier each year.
