Where is poetry happening?
Posted by Robert

So as part of my upcoming move from Southwest Ohio to Northwest Georgia, I've been interested in what the poetry scene is like in the Atlanta area. And lucky for me, there is a website dedicated to poetry events in the area.

The site is called Poetry Atlanta, Inc., and it was created by Dan Veach, editor of the Atlanta Review. If you're interested, check it out at http://www.poetryatlanta.blogspot.com.

So that got me wondering about other areas, and here's a short list of calendars from particular cities:

For NYC, there's the ultimate NYC poetry calendar by Marc Rubin at http://www.poetz.com/calendar.

For Chicago, there's C.J. Laity's http://chicagopoetry.com.

And then, there is the Poetix poetry calendar for Southern California at http://www.poetix.net/calendar.htm.

*****

If you have up-to-date poetry calendars from other areas, please share them with everyone in the comments below. Thanks!

Attica. Nothing. LOL

Question to all:
When publications say "No previous publications," does that include blogs such as this one? Have had conflicting responses, and I figure Robert and y'all might have some insights.

Thanks! Amy

I received this message from Lori Desrosiers to my FaceBook inbox:

My Poetry News is for Western MA and CT, but also has links to many regional poetry events.

Wow! I had no idea that many poetry-related events took place around Chicago. I may not have a chance to go to many of them, but they are there if I can make it. Thanks, Robert, I put that in my favorites for writing sites.

Amy,

From what I understand it is "published" if it has been placed where the general public can read it, whether with ink and paper or electronically. Unless there is a disclaimer/statement within the submission guidelines that specifically states it’s ok to have been previously published, posted on a blog or other internet web site accessible to the general public I would consider it published.

I keep up with North Carolina poetry through Kathryn Stripling Byer's blog: http://ncpoetlaureate.blogspot.com/

Here's a good link to find out the poetry shenanigans in New Jersey - it's sponsored by Passaic County Community College, home of an excellent journal called the Paterson Literary Review. The calendar is a good source for upcoming events (including one hosted by my poetry group in Mt. Holly on Sept. 19th):

There's loads of non-stop poetry readings in the west of Ireland if anyone is interested. Or is this just for U.S. readings?

I've always considered this blog all-inclusive for poets: so that would mean geographically speaking as well as all schools of poetry. Thanks, Fiona!

How fortuitous...I read for the first time ever last night, making me a virgin reader according to the group at the Upper Crust in Edmonton - it was worth it for that comment alone! This particular group meets every Monday night and are part of the Stroll of Poets in Edmonton, Alberta (capital city of this province for those of you unfamiliar).

http://www.strollofpoets.com/index.php (links to all sorts of Alberta and Canada poetry sites) Another good and interesting site (although the most recent festival just ended) http://www.edmontonpoetryfestival.com/ - home of the "Killer Blinks" and another, one of the most useful becase of its many links, http:writersguild.ab.ca plus http://www3.sympatico.ca/susanio/wusclinks.html

About what is considered 'published' - I learned last night that simply reading a poem disqualified it from some competitions here in Canada, and have noticed that posting anywhere is considered published by most contests and magazines etc.

Ah, Fiona, I was just in Killarney last October. If only I'd had that link to find a reading to attend! I'm coming to Dublin next February, though, so I'll have to check out the poetry scene there. And I did have the opportunity to read my poetry in London nearly 3 years ago.

Okay, never having thought of looking for poetry in my area I googled it this morning...there is:
www.minnesotapoetry.com
I also discovered that www.poets.org/MN has a state section, hence the MN. I didn't check the site out, so I don't know if they have a calendar section or it's just about MN poets.

One last site and I'll cease and desist - I think I was also referred to this one by Writers Digest but am not positive. While I neither live in Boston nor New York, I have been to both places and hope to visit both again. Plus, with such vibrant communities, it fascinates me to see what is happening there on a regular basis, hence I subscribe to AGNI online, the links to the cities can be found at http://www.bu.edu/agni One last thing, can anyone tell me what AGNI stands for? I've searched the site rather thoroughly (I think) and haven't been able to discover this - before I risk making a fool of myself and asking them directly, I thought I'd throw it out here. Thanks.
