New contest: Write the best story opening based on this prompt for a chance to be featured in Writer's Digest

From mystery to horror to literary fiction and everything in between, we publish a single fiction story in each issue of Writer’s Digest magazine: the winner of our Your Story prompt contest.

But not this time.

For our special September Big 10 issue (more to come on that later), we’re going to be printing the 10 best story openers based on the photograph below.

The deadline is May 14, and you can enter by posting your opening (35 words or fewer) in the Comments section to this post, or by sending your piece to YourStoryContest@fwmedia.com with “Special Big 10 Prompt” in the subject line. And of course, if you're up for it, feel free to post the rest of your story in the Comments below for everyone, too.

Good luck!

Also, be sure to check back this week -- we've got a special interview on creativity (and a prompt) with bestselling author Brenda Novak lined up.

Becky was resolute. She was really leaving this time, and there was nothing Jesse could say to stop her from getting on that bus. He could keep the pink Caddy, too, for all she cared.

Elena was there to meet her. But Vato kept telling her "que no," there was no one coming, especially not La Virgin, who didn't travel this part of I-10, ever.
If she didn't get back in the car, he said he would leave for Coleman without her. And the new life they had longed for together, would be forgotten.

It was to be the summer of magic. They would drive to the desert in the candy-pink Cadillac, but something was missing. Eve needed to go back and Coyote wasn’t going to stop her.

The highway is a strange place, filled with weirdly wired people and dusty landscapes and dying grass and sadly distant trees. And her. Her eccentric native-teal dresses, flowing and sticking to sweetly tanned skin.

She's leaving. I-10 is behind us, now my candy apple convertible idles a sad song. "Not leaving. . .just living," she shouted. I laughed. Now she's hanging a thumb in the air, waiting for a ride.

The arid ground matched the feel of her soul, as Trina stood contemplating her next move. The soft wind, blowing her dress did nothing to quell the heat within her, as she sensed Brett's nonchalance.

Jeremiah was determined and stood his ground. Pop would be awful angry if he didn’t see to it that she made that connection. When Tracy left, the trouble that followed her would go as well.

He couldn't take her, but as the dry air drifted her perfume, he breathed it in. It filled his lungs, his memories, but not the stony emptiness or the danger down that road.

Marie wasn’t about to spend the last five hours of her life in a pink Cadillac, even if Bryan had been right about everything. Now it was her turn to be the defiant one.

He loved her, more than any girl before. He lived off the air she exhaled with each breath. Still, he knew the only way he’d survive was to get her to her wedding on time.

She told him to leave, that she only needed a ride to the bus stop and nothing more but he didn't listen. He lingered on hood of their car, hoping she would change her mind, waiting for the words to come to him; ones that would make her stay.

He knew this was the end, her absent tears only confirmed that this time was different than all the rest. Before, there were always tears. Now, she was calm, too calm. Resolute. She argued that morning that it didn't matter what he would say or do; they were broken and could never be fixed. If he only had more time he thought.

He was at her side instantly, dust spewed up from the gravel road under his cowboy boots. "Anna."

She tried to shake him off, "Drew, please don't do this."

He looked down to see her fingers had formed into masts of clenched
fists. "Just give me one more day." He begged.

"I told you, it's over. Now please, just. Just go." She looked away.

"Twenty-four hours, that's all I'm asking for."

It’s odd how fate intervenes.
I guess I was meant to help her. I’d seen her, not 24 hours ago at the filling station just inside city limits. Bright blue dress blowing in the breeze, those legs, how could you not. She was on the payphone crying, desperate sounds in her voice. Stuff like that just tugs at your strings, you know? I started to head to my car, well, not my car. Samantha insisted on troubling a guy two counties over to match some cheap lipstick she’d found in a dollar store. Deep pink, couldn’t even wear the stuff because it broke her out, but she had to have the color. Hope she likes it, that’s a LOT of pink…

Dragoon Springs. Population 73. Hardly a wide spot at the intersection of two narrow, dusty roads off Interstate 10 on Arizona's eastern desert. Maggie Dupree is waiting for a bus that will take her away from a place with little more than a dude ranch, museum, and an over-priced saloon. Without turning her head she can see Ned Boucher seated on the hood of his red convertible. If not for the pill, his pimp-mobile would be the source of a population explosion for the town. She knows he's looking at her as well, but any feelings she may have held for him has become as weathered, worn down, and worn out as the surrounding mountains, shot through the heart like the Confederate soldiers by Cochise's warriors 150 years ago. At least she can leave. Ned can't. Doing it now will prove to be the best decision she will ever make in her life, for what is about to step off the approaching bus is not your average tourist.

“Paul.”
“Paul,” she smiles. “Laura,” she says as she starts her way away. “Well, Goodbye.”

The second time wasn’t any easier. I could barely stand to look at her waiting, frightened, still innocent. Sending another sister to them was unforgivable. But, I was a good brother in a bad situation.

Perhaps if I do not look at him it would make this parting easier. I want to run back to him, hold him tight and never let him go. However, no I just cannot do it.

The drama whore.

He nearly prayed someone’d offer her a ride so he could watch her fold, choose him yet again, and he could slap her across her baby face for the gall.

The girl was a seductive bait. I looked at the road merging into I-10 where kristen stood. We chose I-10 for two reasons, one, it marked our 10th robbery and second it helped Kristen and I tan while we waited to pounce on our next prey.

Robert, the son of a coal miner from Cumbria, leant on the hood of his caddy. He was living the American dream, and that's why she was leaving him.

From the bar to the bed to the road. Lara sighed and shifted the heavy suitcase. She wondered if this Rico Suave wannabe, sitting on his raspberry Cadillac, ever took “No” for an answer.

One moment she was storming off and the next moment he was gone, nothing left but a smoking hole where he had been sitting, smirking, on his “baby”. Where had that plane come from?

The Greyhound bus was late.
"We missed it."
She didn't look at him. "We didn't miss it."
"Don't be stupid."
"You did maybe."
"Get back in the car."
"I'd rather stand out here all night."

Of course he took her to the bus. She was pregnant with his child. He could afford to wait. He could afford to be generous. He had the time he needed to plan.

Maria glanced out of the corner of her eye. The man was still leaning against the red convertible. He had been following her for some time now. What made him stop now? Was he trying to make her panick? She was alone, in the nausea stage of pregnancy, and wouldn’t give much of a fight. Maybe he saw her at the diner, hurry toward the bathroom door, and knew her state of health. Why didn’t he make his move?

For Carly, getting to Memphis was the priority, even if sexual favors were her only collateral.

“Hitchin’ a ride on a dusty road, searchin’ for the mother lode.”

Clutching her favorite suitcase, Ginny eagerly awaited the Greyhound's arrival. Travis, his heart heavy with regret, knew he couldn't change her mind. Why she played these wicked games he could never reckon.

Jake spent his last greenback on the 'Full Wax and Deetale' from the Zelinger's combo BBQ Ribs and Drive-Thru Kar Kleen instead of gas. 2nd Trimester Darlene wished she'd taken the Pill instead of Tic-Tacs.

Thoughts were pulsating through Maybelline’s head like electric shocks as she stood silently on the dusty road to Vegas waiting for a ride, any ride to get her the hell away from smooth talking Ricky.

He was sitting on her hood the same way he had so many times before, one leg up, his foot resting on her bumper, and pretending not to watch the girl nearby.

And then there it was, the slight look in his direction, the shy smile. The young woman standing in the Texas sun was flirting with him. “But he’s mine, doesn’t she know that?” the car thought, as she watched the age old dance. No matter, she would wait and watch, and if it went beyond flirting, she would end it for him. This bitch in the blue dress would not be the first, there was a long wake of broken hearts and broken bodies scattered along the many roads they had traveled. So far he had never suspected it had anything to do with his car, his beloved Cadillac convertible. She was carful, and he always chalked it up to his “bad luck with women.” And he always came back to her, to his “Cadi”, for comfort and freedom. Two things that only a car and the open road can provide. “Just me, him, and the open road.” That’s how it is, that’s how it had always been, and as far as she was concerned, that’s how it would stay.

“A new life. You?”

“Picking up Dad’s mail order wife.”
